Weight Watchers Check In: The One Before the Disney Vacation

Happy New Year!

Going to your Weight Watchers meeting after Christmas is a little bit like going to get in line at the DMV.  You don't want to go, but you know you need to be there.  After ALL the food I ate this week, I was seriously considering just skipping.  Do you know what happens when you skip your weigh-in?  You give yourself permission to ignore something you have worked so hard on for the last 5 months (or longer, this is my specified time--THIS time is the LAST time).  You give yourself permission to keep on "cheating" until you finally decide to go back and face the music.  I'd much rather face it head on than wait 3 weeks and it be far worse.

So let's recap the last week, shall we??  Christmas Eve.  I start out Sunday with a bang!  We met friends, Fred and Molly, for lunch as they traveled over the hills and through the woods from Charlotte to Dobson.  We had decided on Friday that we'd try a burger spot in downtown Winston--far away from any mall so traffic would be light.  Burger Batch did not disappoint.  There are several burgers on this menu I want to try.  And lucky for me, they are opening one VERY close to my house.  (Okay, that might be unlucky, but my favorite cheat meal is a big ol' burger).

I read over the menu and settle for The Winston.  Potato Chips, Pimento Cheese and Onion Marmalade.  Holy Mother, it was the BEST burger I've eaten in the LONG time.  I knew I was going to order one of their renowned shakes, so I skipped the side (also known as fries) and just ordered the burger.  Served up in a small frying pan with some homemade pickles.  Yes, the pickles were yummy, too.  The shake I ordered was the Wow, It's a Cow!  All of my favorite cereals right where I wanted them....surrounding a Frosted Flake Shake.

Needless to say, it was the only meal I had that day.  It wasn't the only thing I ate.  We headed home to rest up for the Mendenhall Christmas Eve Happy Hour.  My sister, mom, and I prepared some great hors d'ouvres.  None of which were healthy.  We had the vodka flowing and Cinnamon Jello shots for the adults to relax while while the kids played.  It was at then I realized why Happy Hour was so important during the holidays.  The kids were keyed up and wild and crazy.  I totally understood the Hoskins Happy Hour at Christmas....heck, at ALL gatherings.  I see so much of my nieces and nephews in us growing up so close in age.  We must have been just as wild, but always happy!

Christmas Morning.  We've moved breakfast to the brunch hour these days to accommodate Santa's arrival and plenty of play time before heading to mom and dad's house.  There, we have our traditional Sausage Strata, baked apples, homemade Moravian Sugar Cake (seen below), and grits.  Apple Cider (with Fireball, if desired) or coffee or a screw driver, if needed.

All of this junk in a two day period had me wondering how I would ever get back on track.  And it wasn't easy.  Plenty of candy in my stocking and, of course, we have plenty of Sugar Cake at the house.  It's been a struggle this week.  I haven't been as diligent as I have been in the past.  Mostly because I WANT to enjoy these things we have ONCE a year.  I also have a vacation planned for the first week of January.  I knew I would be 'off' for a few weeks, but I didn't want to undo everything I have worked so hard for up to now.

So, I got back to the gym on Tuesday and my favorite HIIT class on Wednesday.  I am sore from that class.  We worked shoulders like nobody's business.  After that class, though, I KNEW I was back on track.  I knew I could recover.  There is something about that class that motivates me and makes me feel stronger every single time.  I am actually dreading missing it next week while I'm on vacation.

The moment of truth came Saturday morning, AFTER my 4 mile run at the gym.  Run Disney Training says the training is a 9 miler, but I can't run for 2 hours on the treadmill and it's TOO dang cold for my lungs outside.  I don't want to get sick either.  I'm 57 days out from my Disney Princess Half Marathon and I want to be healthy and ready to beat the time of my first half.  Ah, but I digress.  Where was I?  Oh yes....today's weigh-in.
I gained .2--that's POINT 2.  Not 2, not 1, but .2.  I have not had a gain since December 2nd and that was hot on the heels of Thanksgiving when I gained 1 pound.  To say I was pleased would be an understatement.  It's proves a couple of things to me, though.  First, you CANNOT out run a bad diet.  Second, exercise is a huge asset when it comes to losing weight and getting healthy.  I'll be on vacation next week, but luckily, I'll still be training while I'm gone and where I'm going...I'll be getting plenty of steps every day, too.

How was your holiday?  Don't let the holidays get you off track.  Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back to it.  My goal this time is lifetime.  I'm not even halfway there, but I'm a lot closer than I was 5 months ago.
